How to Live with the Word of God
Today’s passage explains what the desert life meant to the people of Israel. Though their life in the desert was a period of testing and hardship, it was a good opportunity to learn how to obey God’s law.

Who is God like?
Vv. 1-3 God made the Israelites walk through the desert for forty years with a purpose. It was “to humble,” “to test,” and “to know.” It was for them to find humility through testing and training and to rely and live on every Word that comes from the mouth of the Lord. For Israel, it was the true, happy, and safe way. Do you have any hardship beyond your understanding in life? It is what God permits to teach you what you would never learn when you are well and prosperous. Therefore, do not act like Israel when it blamed God at Massah (6:16), but love God humbly and deeply from the bottom of your heart; rejoice, expecting happiness from hardship (Jas 1:2-4).
Vv. 4, 5 As a father trains a son, God trains His people (Pr 3:12; Heb 12:7). This is surely for our benefit. Therefore, even though it is hard, we have to know that God is not the one who leads us into trouble blindly or without purpose. God cared that the clothes of the Israelites did not wear out and their feet did not swell in the midst of trouble. Understand the true heart of a father who leads the way out of deep trouble.
Vv. 7-10 God leads people walking through ‘all the way in the desert’ (v. 2) to ‘a good land’ (v. 7) and ‘the good land’ (v. 10). He will make ‘hungry’ (v. 3) people ‘lack nothing’ (v. 9). The situation will be restored at the right time. We have to focus on His Word.
