The Creator God on the Throne
The dignity and the glory of the Creator God have been described through various metaphors. Four living creatures that represent all creatures and twenty-four elders who represent God’s people praise God without ceasing.
Who is God like?
Vv. 2b, 3 Even though the worldly authority is powerful and God’s people are persecuted, the one who sits on the heavenly throne and reigns is God alone. The glory of God is like the appearance of jasper, carnelian, a rainbow, and emerald. These gems are presented when Eden (Eze 28:13), the temple (priest, Ex 28:17-20), and the New Jerusalem (Rev 21:18-20) are described. The rainbow reminds us of the covenant of Noah to look over the new creation. We can expect the glory of God, as glorious as gems and rainbows, to fulfill the new creation.
What lesson is God teaching me?
Vv. 1, 8b-11 We can praise when we begin to see from heaven’s view. Praise is centered on God. He is living and worthy to be praised. We can praise whenever we remember and confirm He is the ruler of all Creation. We can praise days and nights without ceasing when we look over our life from His throne, see the present in the sight of eternity, and imagine beyond the present.
Vv. 4, 10, 11 As the twenty-four elders representing God’s people express absolute obedience to cast their crowns to God, they give glory, nobility, and power to the Lord of history who created all creatures and reigned over them by His will. Praise is the expression of absolute obedience. Examine whether your praise is praise and service for self-satisfaction without humble obedience.
I praise the Lord who created and reigns over all creation and who will renew me.
