The Plot to kill Jesus

Jesus clearly revealed that He is the ‘Lord of resurrection’ by raising Lazarus from the dead. Still, the Jewish leaders conspired to kill Jesus.

Thinking & Understanding
The miracle of Jesus raising Lazarus from the dead cannot be explained other than by the power of God. However, there were still people who did not believe in Jesus even after witnessing this amazing miracle (vv. 45-46). Moreover, the Jewish religious leaders concluded that they had to kill Jesus, because they were worried that more people would believe in Him, and if riots happened by the people who believes in Jesus, the Romans would oppress them (the leaders) by force which would take away their authority and welfare (vv. 47-53).

What lesson is God teaching me?
The reason why the Jewish leaders decided to kill Jesus was because they believed Jesus would take away their authority and vested rights. Even today, those who try to believe in Jesus without giving themselves up are bound to find Jesus uncomfortable. Remember that trying to believe Jesus while trying to live a life of luxury leads the same behavior of the Jews who plotted to kill Jesus.

Tip 1
11:45 Here John uses the phrase the Jews in a positive way, to refer to those Jews who believed in him (cf. ESV SB note on 1:19). 11:47 Council represents the Greek word synedrion: Ruler of the Jews (Jn 3:1) refers to a member of the Jewish governing body called the Sanhedrin.

Tip 2
11:48 Take away … our nation may refer to the feared removal of the Jews’ semiautonomous status by the Romans (1Macc 5:19). Ironically, what the Sanhedrin sought to prevent by killing Jesus still came to pass when the Romans razed the temple and captured Jerusalem in a.d. 70.
