Upbuilding People

As Paul concludes his letter, he confesses his true feelings before he visits the Corinthian church. He had planned this for a long time.

Thinking & Understanding
Paul notifies the Corinthian church of his third visit. Paul says that he did not burden the Corinthian believers in his past two visits, and will not be a burden again this time. This is because Paul, with the heart of a spiritual father, tried to devote himself even more to the believers in Corinth. Even so, some people within the church criticized Paul for trying to receive more money through offerings of aid, even though he said that he would not receive any donations (vv. 14-16). In response to this, Paul stressed that he had never taken anything or deceived the Corinthian church. He explained that the reason he was visiting the Corinthian church at this time was not to take the offerings from them, but for the sole purpose of upbuilding the church (vv. 17-19).

What Lesson is God Teaching Me?
As much as possible, Paul did his best not to be a burden to the Corinthian church. Rather, he wanted to be an influence for their upbuilding in grace. Do you have an inward, personal expectation from your community, rather than devoting yourself to the community?

Tip 1
12:14–15 for the third time I am ready to come to you. On his first visit Paul had planted the church at Corinth. His second visit was the “painful visit” (2:1). Paul mentions one last time his refusal to burden the Corinthians financially as the loving act of a spiritual parent (To be continued in Tip 2)

Tip 2
(Following Tip 1) for his children, since acting this way embodies his message and life as an apostle and calls into question the claims of Paul’s opponents. 12:19 Paul’s self-defense is fundamentally for the Corinthians’ sake, not his own, and is pleasing to God, for he has been speaking in the sight of God.

기도

Prayer Lord, help me to be a vital part of building up my community of faith, rather than scarring my community through my selfish words and actions.
