The Judgment that Comes Upon Israel and Judah
The sin of Oholah and Oholibah (Samaria and Jerusalem) is fully revealed; they were worshipping other gods (v. 37), desecrating the Sabbath (v. 38), and desecrating the sanctuary (v. 39). Now the judgment because of the sin is being declared.
What lesson is God teaching me?
Verses 37-39- These women served two masters. Israel committed idolatry but at the same time also worshipped God. They placed God and foreign gods on equal footing and served them both. Today, there is a tendency where believers love both God and the world. But Christians cannot serve both God and the world. You cannot serve two masters.
Verses 40-42- When Judah and Israel were facing danger, they did not seek help from God but relied on foreign nations and lifted up offerings to them instead of to God. Through the exchanges with foreign nations, they were able to enjoy wealth and honor for a little while, but they lost their husband God. When you lose God, you lose everything. Are you loving and trusting something besides God to gain riches from the world?
Verses 43-47- These two sisters were corrupt both religiously and politically, and the method of their punishment will also come in two ways, through the righteous (v. 45) and through the mob (v. 47). Righteous people know the difference between right and wrong. The righteous have the ability to conclude that the women really were obscene. But God did not just use the righteous people to bring about judgment. He also used the mob. When we sin, we do not know by what means or person God will judge us. We need to always be ready to acknowledge our sin and turn from it.
